Get the skinny on art at Design After Dark
Michael Paglia
This year’s Design After Dark, a fundraising gala hosted by the Denver Art Museum’s Design Council (the support group for the department of Architecture, Design & Graphics) has been given the subtitle Skin. But don’t get the wrong idea: The reference has nothing to do with nudity. Instead, Skinis all about surfaces, like the glass tiles on Gio Ponti’s North Building or to the titanium on Daniel Libeskind’s Hamilton Building.
“We’ve opened up the theme of the event this year,” says Darrin Alfred, the AIGA assistant curator of graphic art at the DAM, “and we’ve asked artists and designers to create works on the theme of skin.” One such effort is a motor scooter that artist Scott LeFavor has wrapped with a digital print on vinyl. The scooter, which will be raffled off during the festivities, is just one of around thirty unique items that were created by local designers like cipher 13, DoubleButter and Matter Studio. The entire program is courtesy of the efforts of Megan Hudacky and Steve Chucovich, who served as co-chairs.
The party is being held at Redline Gallery, 2350 Arapahoe Street, beginning at 7 p.m.; Luxe Interiors & Design and Benjamin Moore Paints are helping to underwrite the cost. The money raised will be used to acquire pieces for the ADG department’s collection; in the past, Design After Dark has paid for acquisitions such as the psychedelic rock posters that were featured in a very popular show last summer.
There’s an elaborate ticket structure, with advanced purchases at $35 for people under 35 (be prepared to prove it), $60 for DAM and Design Council members, and $75 for the general public. Tickets will also be available at the door, but will cost $10 more in each category. To purchase tickets, go to www.blacktie-colorado.com.
